How many rainy day activities are there in Hilton Head? Plenty! Hopefully, bad weather doesn’t happen on your vacation, but here’s some fun things to do when there is rain: “Plaza Crawls”. I usually save my shopping/errands for either rainy day activities or a “sunburn recovery” day for my visitors. Sort of like a pub crawl, my Plaza Crawls will give you all the info you need to have fun with everyone, without getting wet.
Let’s start with the Tanger Outlets. Okay, this is an obvious one, but let me give you my take on the best way to do it to maximize both your time and your fun. To get there fast, drive in the back way. When coming off the island, make a left at the first traffic light (opposite Moss Creek). Then take a right onto the Bluffton Parkway. You have now found the way we Islanders avoid traffic. The Bluffton Parkway parallels 278 and has back entrances to all the major businesses.
Tanger 2 is the first set of shops on the right. Park near Nosh Restaurant, as this is your lunch stop for great burgers (Lamb & Beef is my favorite!), craft beers, wonderful wines and a fun atmosphere, all with a unique southern flair. This restaurant, owned by Robert Irvine, is famous for the cable show “Restaurant Impossible”. After you place your order, have someone run to the Customer Service Kiosk around the corner to pick up your Tanger Outlet coupon booklet. AAA/CAA and AARP members get one free, but even if you have to pay a small fee, it will be worth it if you plan to eat and shop. There are coupons for almost all the outlet stores, plus many attractions on and off the island. Nosh has a 10% off coupon for food, so you are saving money right off the bat!
Want to keep young kids busy while you shop? There is a 10% off coupon for the Island Indoor Playground just down the road, across from Moss Creek. While one of the adults will have to stay with the kids, everyone else is free to enjoy themselves. There are several golf course coupons in the booklet, so maybe a trade is in order – Moms shop today, Dads play golf tomorrow? Sounds fair to me!
My favorite shops are at Tanger 2 (the older set of shops), starting with the Nike Factory Store. Since John and I are both tennis & golf players, shopping at this particular Nike Factory Store is a treat as they usually have a wide selection of last season’s tennis and golf fashions for at least half-price. Ask a Nike clerk if they have more tennis and/or golf clothes in the back if you don’t see what you want. If they do, they will usually bring out items in your size. There are no coupons for Nike, but there are often specials running throughout the store for even more savings.
I then hit Ann Taylor Factory Store (15% off a $100 purchase) while John hits Haggar Men’s Clothing (15% off a $75 Purchase) and we both usually meet up at Clarks Shoes (15% off a $75 purchase) after grabbing a treat at Harry & David’s (25% off a single item). Carter’s is just around the corner if I need clothes for my granddaughter (20% off a $40 purchase). By that time, we are ready to head back to Nosh for after-shopping refreshments. But there are plenty of other stores to keep you happy if you still have the energy.
Keep your coupon book, as it will come in handy in many other places. In the back of the book are coupons for other things to do in the area. Kayaking and dolphin tours with Outside Hilton Head, haunted trolley tours in Savannah, and golf for Dad, plus other rainy day activities: bowling, Sandbox Interactive Museum for Kids and spa treatments. Who says you can’t have fun with rainy day activities at the beach? That is what makes Hilton Head unique: beautiful, serene beaches plus plenty of restaurants and attractions. Everything you need for the perfect vacation or place to live. That’s why we call it Paradise!
